Welcome To

THE MARE PASTURE COMMUNITY

@ Red Wing Ranch

More Than Just Housing

The Mare Pasture is a visionary plan for sustainable housing and living designed by renowned Tucson architect, John Riggs. John grew up on Red Wing Ranch, which includes The Mare Pasture, and is a descendant of Brannick Riggs, founder of the original Riggs Settlement and family ranches in Cochise County. John is passionate about preserving his family's heritage and the beautiful open rangelands of Southeastern Arizona. Location

The Mare Pasture community will feature high-density residential clusters integrated into irrigated pastures, orchards, gardens, and open rangeland. Facilities will also include a liberal arts college, an equestrian center, riding/biking/walking trails, a vineyard, a winery, and hydroponic farming. Agritourism at The Mare Pasture will foster varied business and recreational opportunities, from private "locally grown" dining experiences to regional winery events.

How will creating The Mare Pasture preserve over forty percent of its historic native rangeland?

  • Rangeland

    NATIVE GRASSLAND

A major part of The Mare Pasture's 1,088 acres is Rangeland, the preservation of which is largely due to the consolidated development and efforts of The Mare Pasture community. Grass-fed beef graze peacefully in the mountain pastures, which also provide natural habitat and food for native wildlife including deer, coyotes, javelina, bobcats, rabbits, birds and bees. Located near the base of the Dos Cabezas and Chiracahua Mountains, the ranch features a range of ecologically diverse biomes. Along with expansive views of the surrounding mountains, washes and Sulphur Springs Valley, the community also incorporates open wildlife corridors and avian preserves. Equestrian and hiking trails connect all elements of The Mare Pasture landscape and lead into the mountains.

  • Homes

    SUSTAINABLE AND CONTEMPORARY

The Mare Pasture features high-density residential clusters integrated into irrigated pastures, orchards, and large areas of open rangeland. Walkways and paths encourage residents to park their cars and enjoy a stroll, ride a bicycle or use a quiet electric cart instead. Every single home is situated so that one side opens into the landscaped pathways leading to small common neighborhood areas and to the center of the community, and at least one side has expansive views of the surrounding pastures, mountains, or the Sulphur Springs Valley. Building materials, color, and architecture are integrated with and complement the natural landforms. Homes are contemporary and energy-efficient and equipped with both rainwater catchments and solar panels.

  • Education

    K-12, COLLEGE AND GRADUATE

The Mare Pasture's physical and cultural center will include space for a private liberal arts college with a public university research center for sustainability studies and an agricultural research center for the application of new technologies. The Brannick Institute will be fully integrated with these educational elements. College and community buildings are intertwined to encourage an active, dynamic atmosphere, and to make it easier to host cultural events and to invite inter-generational involvement. The Mare Pasture also hopes to attract viticulture research that can benefit the nearby wine appellations of Southern Arizona.

  • Amenities

    INTEGRATED AND SUSTAINABLE

An equestrian center, a vineyard and winery, a lodge, and a commercial area with space for offices and small retail businesses will be developed to serve the community and visitors. Community gardens and edible landscaping will give residents an opportunity to work together on food and gardening projects. Pedestrian walkways, small neighborhood parks, and a centrally located community square will encourage foot traffic and mingling, and provide outdoor spaces for events. Agritourism at The Mare Pasture will foster varied business and recreational opportunities, from private "locally grown" dining experiences to regional winery events.
